Welcome Back to Wacataya Wednesdays!

September is one of my favorite months of the year because it is a transition month. September holds on to the warmth of Summer while also giving us a peek into the promise of Autumn. At this time of year while I look forward to the beauty and crispness of Autumn I realize I have to say good bye to some of my favorite fruits like watermelon. In honor of Summer and fruits picked at the peak of their flavor today's recipe is for refreshing fruit salad.

Feel free to substitute any fruits you have on hand. To make the salad with a truly Bolivian flair use Cherimoya, Papaya, Mango, Carmbola (star fruit) and whatever other exotic fruits you can get a hold of in your area. My Bolivian friends always like to include strawberries in their fruit salad but I like to use the more exotic fruits with meatier textures that hold on to their shape and color. Strawberries tend to soften quickly and lose their gorgeous red color if they sit around too long in this salad.

There are many online markets where you can buy the exotic fruits of foreign countries if you don't have access to them in your local markets. Cherimoya can be pretty pricey both online and in local markets. While the flavor of a cherimoya is unique you can try combining banana, mango, papaya and pineapple as a substitute. Try to use fresh fruits whenever possible rather than canned.

In Bolivia there is a fruit called lima. Its about the size of an orange, the rind is pale yellow mottled with green and has a mild citrus lemon/orange/lime-like flavor. Its less acidic in flavor than the lemons and limes you find in the U.S.A. Limas are most often used in refrescos/watery fruit drinks but they are great in this fruit salad recipe in place of the limes.

RECIPE: Ensalada de Frutas/Fruit Salad

9 cups fruit, peeled and sliced or diced into bite-sized chunks
(Try using papaya, mango, banana, orange, pineapple, peach, nectarine, plum, apricot, kumquat, persimmon or any other fruit you like)
2 limes or the juice of one lima
3 T sugar or to taste (less if using lima in place of the lime)
  • In a bowl dissolve the sugar into the juice of two limes.
  • Combine the fruit and toss with the sweetened lime juice.
  • Let sit for 30 minutes to let the flavors blend and so the lime juice can pull some of the juice out of the fruit.
  • Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled
